What Is a Class B CDL?
A Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) is the license you need to operate a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, or to tow a trailer under 10,000 pounds. That covers box trucks, straight trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks, garbage trucks, and many buses.
Before you can take your Class B skills test, federal law (FMCSA) requires you to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered provider, following the curriculum in 49 CFR Part 380, Appendix B. That's exactly what this course is — the required ELDT step, done online, for $20.

Yes. The FMCSA allows the theory portion of Class B ELDT to be completed entirely online. ELDT HQ's course is 100% online and self-paced — most students finish in a single day.
There is no federal minimum number of hours for ELDT theory — you must cover all required topics and pass the assessment. Because ELDT HQ's course is self-paced and online, most students complete it in a single day.
This course is the required theory portion of Class B ELDT. The behind-the-wheel (BTW) skills test is conducted separately through your state and a range. This course covers the theory training the FMCSA requires before that test.
The FMCSA requires you to achieve an overall score of at least 80% on the written or electronic theory assessment to complete your ELDT Class B training.
A Class B CDL lets you operate a single vehicle over 26,001 lbs, or tow a trailer under 10,000 lbs — including box trucks, dump trucks, delivery trucks, garbage trucks, and many buses.
The Appendix B curriculum covers five theory areas: basic operation, safe operating procedures, advanced operating practices, vehicle systems and reporting malfunctions, and non-driving activities.
Class B ELDT is for single heavy vehicles like box trucks, dump trucks, and buses. Class A ELDT is for combination vehicles like tractor-trailers. Choose the class that matches the CDL you're pursuing.
ELDT is not retroactive. If you were issued a Class B CDL before February 7, 2022, you don't need to complete the training. If you obtained a commercial learner's permit before that date and get your CDL before it expires, you're also exempt.
Once you complete the course and pass the assessment, your completion is reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Your state uses that record — along with your behind-the-wheel training — to confirm you're eligible for the Class B skills test.
Yes. When you complete the course and pass the assessment, you receive your ELDT completion certificate — your proof of training and your next step toward your Class B CDL.
